Abstract
This article deals with the philosophy of Zhangzai, a philosopher of the Song Dynasty. Zhang zai sees Qi as the source of all things in the universe, and based on this, he develops Monism of Qi. He emphasizes the principle of universal Qi without Differentiation between heaven and all things by calling the main body of the universe Taixu. Taixu has an intrinsic factor in Qi itself bringing out the movement of objects, which is called Yiwuliangti. Yiwu (一物) is a Qi as a universal principle, and Liangti is opposing properties of Yin and Yang inherent in the Qi. Qi changes everything as Yin and Yang interact, and through these changes, the concepts of Shen and Hua are derived. Shen is an intrinsic properties of Qi, and Hua is the action of that change. The action of the opposing Qi that can unfold and return to the action of this Shen and Hua is called the Guishen (鬼神). This Guishen action plays a role in connecting heaven and all things. In other words, Qi of an intangible Taixu acts as a medium of action that causes morphological change into tangible Qi. At this time, the Qi of the original substance that appeared after change is called Xing, and the action of the change is called Ming. What Zhang zai is talking about is Tiandao (天道), and Ming refers to the moral mission embodied in the Xing. In Confucianism, it is said that humans received a Xing from heaven. It is said that the nature of human received is morality, and that following a moral nature is doing Ming. Therefore, self awareness of Xing is the recognition of Tiandao, which means the self awareness of morality. Zhang zai emphasizes human moral nature through Xing and human moral mission through Ming. Therefore, Zhang zai's intention to speak through Qi is not to talk about the generative process of Qi, but to emphasize that humans must act as moral beings.
