노서 윤선거의 문인 고찰

Abstract

This study considers those students of Noseo Yoon Seon-geo and their activities. Noseo Yoon Seon-geo is the father of Myeongjae Yoon Jeung (明齋尹拯) counted as one of Chungcheong’s five prominent figures. Yoon Seon-geo went through succession from father to son that had hardly been found in the Joseon Confucian history. He suffered grief from the loss of his wife during war, which led him to stay in Gumsan and started teaching. His brilliant talent had already been known to the world, at the age of his 20s. Soon, he settled in Noseong area and continued to teach. Those whom he taught were scholars from Hoseo, Honam, Seoul, and Gyeonggi areas. What is noteworthy is that these scholars were recorded in Yoeunjip (要隱集) of Go Yeo-heung (高汝興), and Maehakyugo (梅壑遺 稿) of Seo Bong-ryeong(徐鳳齡). This researcher traced history back to the records of those students of Yoon Seon-geo, based on the essay and inscriptions on the tombstones that younger students had left, and finally found the achievements of about 30 persons. Yoon Seon-geo tried to follow the example of the study that his maternal grandfather Ugye Seong Hon (牛溪成渾) had completed. The man who took the great pride in academic study tried to show full moral obligations to his friend Song Si-yeol (宋時烈). Unfortunately, this behavior became the target of blame, which brought his son Yoon Jeung to suffer a great deal of agony. In the fierce protest against this treatment toward the father and son, those students of Yoon Seon-geo fought and resisted. Then, they began to write books, in pursuit of ‘Learning to Become a Sage (爲己之學)’, while serving for the high and low-ranking official positions, less brilliant as they were. A number of his students were recommended to get official positions. There were a handful of records about those students of Yoon Seon-geo. Yet, this research found out the achievements that they had attained, in other words, they defended their mentor Yoon Seon-geo and risked their necks to fight for his son Yoon Jeung. It is considered that they deserve high respect and praise for what they did like that. One of the most particular and remarkable events is that they worked together to resist against attacks from political enemies, introduced new study, and organized a new political group. It is anticipated that a research about those persons would contribute to extending the chapter of the Joseon Confucian history.
