Abstract

This paper argues that the practical Confucian spirit and activities of Jo Heon, a key figure in Korean history, are essential for the restoration of both individual and national identity, as well as for fostering moral character in contemporary society. In modern-day Korea, Confucian values are being overshadowed by materialism and individualism. Jo Heon, who practiced a moral life based on Loyalty (忠義), Filial piety (孝誠), Respect for teachers (私事), Friendship (友情) serves as a model for the cultivation of character in contemporary moral education. The paper categorizes Jo Heon's Confucian spirit and activities into four key aspects: Loyalty, Filial piety, Respect for teachers, Friendship, illustrating each with relevant anecdotes. First, Jo Heon’s spirit of Loyalty emphasizes dedication to the country and the king, which can provide solutions to issues of corruption in modern society. His Filial piety is exemplified through his deep respect for his parents and commitment to fulfilling his duties as a son, offering valuable lessons for contemporary parent-child relationships. Jo Heon’s Friendship, based on virtue rather than status, rank, or age, highlights the importance of trust in human relationships. Finally, his Respect for teachers reflects the respect and devotion one should have for his teachers, offering crucial insights for building relationships of mutual trust and respect in educational settings. In this way, Jo Heon’s Confucian spirit and activities contribute not only to the moral development of individuals but also to the unity of the nation and society. This spirit can positively influence the development of the country by fostering personal integrity and, ultimately, help in the development of a dignified and refined national identity for South Korea.
