한국어교육에서 학습자 주도성 연구의 확장을 위한 논의

초록

학습자 주도성은 지난 50년간 응용언어학계에서 지속적 관심을 받아 온 연구 주제이다. 언어 학습에 미치는 학습자 주도성 관련 긍정적 영향이 다수 밝혀짐으로 인해, 그리고 언어 교육의 패러다임이 학습자 중심 접근법으로 변화됨으로 인해, 학습자 주도성은 언어 연구 및 교육에서 중요한 위치를 차지해 오고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 한국어교육 분야에서의 학습자 주도성 연구가 기존 응용언어학 분야의 학습자 주도성 연구에 기여할 수 있도록 그 확장 방향을 모색하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 국내 학술지에 게재된 한국어 학습자 주도성 관련 논문을 중심으로 국내 한국어 학습자 주도성 연구의 양상을 파악하였다. 양상 분석 결과, 국내 한국어 학습자 주도성 연구는 비교적 꾸준한 양적 증가세를 보여주었으나, 연구의 절대적 편수와 연평균 출간 편수는 상당히 적은 실정이었다. 또한, 대부분의 연구가 학습자 주도성의 개인적 차원에 주목하고 있었다. 이러한 연구에서 학습자 주도성은 교육 방안의 설계 원리로서, 교재의 평가의 기준으로서, 혹은 학습 동기와 관련하여 다소 주변적으로 언급되는 경향이 있었다. 따라서 한국어 학습자 주도성 연구의 양적 증대 및 기존 연구 영역에서의 연구의 질 제고가 필요함을 제언하였다. 더불어, 사회·상호작용적 차원, 교육 환경적·문화적 차원, 정치적 차원 등 학습자 주도성의 다양한 차원에 대한 면밀하고 심도 있는 개념적·이론적·실증적 연구도 활발히 이루어져야 함을 강조하였다.

Abstract

Learner autonomy has garnered significant attention for over the past five decades in applied linguistics because of its positive impact on language learning and the educational shift towards a learner-centered approach, where promoting learner autonomy is a key component. This study explores avenues for expanding research on learner autonomy within the field of Korean language education in a way that contributes to the ongoing international dialogues on the topic. A literature review was conducted on learner autonomy, focusing on articles related to Korean language pedagogy published in South Korean academic journals. The findings revealed that, while the number of publications has been gradually increasing, both the total number of studies and the annual publication rate remain relatively low. Existing studies primarily explore the individual dimension of learner autonomy as a basis for designing teaching methods, evaluating textbooks, or examining its relationship with learner motivation. Based on these findings, this study highlights the need to 1) achieve quantitative growth, 2) expand the research scope through conceptual diversification of learner autonomy, and 3) enhance research depth in the areas explored.
