성체극의 발전에 있어서 음악은 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 16세기 초 성체극이 탄생되면서부터 음악이 사용되었지만, 그것은 극의 도입부나 종결부를 장식하는 부차적인 요소로 활용되는 수준이었다. 트렌토 공의회가 폐회되고 반종교개혁이 본격적으로 전개되는 16세기 후반으로 가면서 성체극은 관객 교육이라는 종교적 목적을 위하여 음악을 적극적으로 활용하게 된다. 후안 데 띠모네다의 성체극은 바로 이런 시대적인 환경 가운데 창작되었기 때문에이전 시대의 성체극과 다른 방식으로 음악을 사용하고 있다. 작가는 그리스 비극의 프롤로그부분을 가톨릭 미사 전례의 입당송으로 대체하고, 합창 속의 후렴구를 통하여 성체에 관한 교리를 반복적으로 관객들에게 교육하였다. 디오니소스 제전의 제사장과 같은 역할을 담당하였던 고전 비극의 극작가는 이제 성체성사를 비롯한 칠성사의 효력에 대해 신자들에게 강론하는가톨릭교회의 사제의 역할을 담당하게 된 것이다. 작가는 대중의 호응을 유도하고 종교적 감수성을 일깨우기 위해 음악을 비롯하여 춤과 같은 시청각적 요소들을 적극적으로 사용하였다. 극의 도입부와 대미를 장식하던 코러스를 개별 배우들의 독창으로 확대시켰으며, 음악의 공간을무대 뒤편으로까지 확장하였다. 이를 통하여 무대 정면이 가리키는 가시적인 현실 세계와 대비되는 천상의 세계를 창조함으로써, 그리스 비극을 그리스도교적 신비극으로 적절하게 변용하고 있다. 스페인 성체극은 후안 데 띠모네다를 거치면서 장르의 전성기인 17세기에 가히 폭발적인 형태로 음악적인 요소를 도입한다. 스페인 연극에서 성체극은 사르수엘라와 같은 음악극의 발전에 중요한 장르가 되는데, 띠모네다의 성체극은 형태적으로 언어극적 성체극이 음악극형식의 성체극으로 이행해가는 과도기적 단계의 작품으로 자리매김할 수 있다.
Abstract
Music played an important and essential role in the development of sacramental act. This religious dramamade an active use ofmusical elements to educate the audience with the doctrines of the Council of Trent in the second half of the 16th century. At this time, the sacramental acts of Juan de Timoneda were created and the author usedmusic in different ways fromthe former works of the same genre. Timoneda reproduced and transformed functions of chorus in ancient Greek tragedy. He replaced the prologue of Greek drama into Introit of Catholic Mass. While the dramatist of ancient tragedy played the role as chief priest of Dionysian festival, Timoneda charged the role of priests in the Catholic Church, giving a sermon about the effect of the Sacrament of Eucharist to the audience. The author made use of audiovisual elements actively like music and dancing, not only to attract the public’s response but to arouse religious sensibility. Timoneda placed music in the back of the stage, so he created a spiritual world in contrast of a visible real world, which was resented at the front stage. Through these reformations, Juan de Timoneda transformed Greek tragedy into Christian mystery drama properly. In Spanish drama, sacramental act became an important genre in the development of musical play like zarzuela. Timoneda’s sacramental act was in a period of transition fromdialogue drama tomusical play.
