Abstract
This paper discusses why clausal ellipsis is obligatory in Spanish free exceptive constructions headed by excepto/salvo/menos. Free exceptive differs from bound exceptive in both licensing of the exceptional element XP and the possibility of XP-fronting. Previous analyses have considered free exceptive as an instance of clausal ellipsis, though the details of each analysis differ from each other. Pérez-Jiménez & Moreno Quibén(2011, 2012) propose that free exceptive in Spanish involves a coordinate structure whose head is the coordinator excepto/salvo/menos, whereas Shim(2015) suggests that it is an adjunct clause headed by the complementizer excepto/salvo/menos. However, earlier studies do not specify the reason why ellipsis is obligatory in free exceptive construction. In this paper, I argue that the syntax of free exceptive constructions in Spanish involves an additional process; namely C-deletion, along with TP-ellipsis. This additional deletion avoids the potential problem with the stranded C at PF. The present analysis also suggests that in Spanish free exceptive constructions, both excepto and excepto que have the same source; they are two different PF-realizations of a single derivation. To support the claim that C-deletion as a Last Resort operation is required for the analysis of Spanish free exceptive constructions, I discuss two additional cases where X-deletion is needed to circumvent the stranded affix at PF.
