Abstract
The objective of this study is to closely analyze how José Martí's Chronicles build the essence of American and Latin American culture on the dichotomy of materialistic desire and the pursuit of the soul. This study reveals that Martí attempted to overcome the limitations of American modernization by constructing individuals with freedom of thought (intellectual elites) as modern subjects, but faced a contradiction in that his elitist model conflicted with the banner of egalitarian community. As a narrative strategy to reconcile the fissure of his dichotomy, Martí reduces the subjects of American society to the masses and portrays them as greedy and losing freedom of imagination through the gendered representation of modern subject.
