본 연구는 1881년부터 1895년 사이에 집필된 크로니카에 재현된 미국의 흑인 난민과 해외 이민자 노동자 이미지를 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 마르티의 크로니카는 인종 개념 자체를 중요하게 다루기보다, 각 인종이 미국 사회에 미치는 영향을 진단하고 이에 따른 사회적 해결책을 제시하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있음을 증명하고자 한다. 나아가 마르티가 인종 간 평등을 주장하면서도, 엘리트주의에 머무는 내적 모순 위에서 담론을 구축하는 양상이 쿠바 이민자로서 미국 사회 내 타자와 사회현상을 분석하는 지식인 사이에서 불안정하게 형성된 발화 위치에서 기인함을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the images of black refugees and overseas immigrant workers in the United States represented in José Martí’s chronicles written between 1881 and 1895. It seeks to reveal that these texts focus on diagnosing the impact of each race on American society and suggesting social solutions accordingly, rather than focusing on the concept of race itself. Furthermore, it aims to show that Martí’s discourse, while advocating for racial equality, is built upon an internal contradiction rooted in an elitist perspective. This contradiction arises from the unstable position of enunciation, formed by his status as both an other in American society -as a Cuban immigrant- and as a Spanish American intellectual analyzing social phenomena.
