Abstract

This study focuses on the subversiveness of dominant discourses through the representation of femininity in the novels published in Mexico from the mid to late 19th century. Therefore, the present work analyzes the relation between the strategies for establishing the subjectivity of modern citizens and the gender representation of the narrative works. The main objects of analysis are Vulcano (1861) by Hilarión Frías y Soto, Memorias de Paulina (1874) by José Negrete, and La Rumba (1890) by Ángel de Campos. This study discusses the aspects in which these three works visualize the potential or actual risk factors that would overthrow the social system of the time as the characteristics of the main female characters. Second, the present analysis try to prove that the various models of dangerous women represented in these works play a role in revealing the challenges faced by Mexican society in each period, as well as defining the scope of the male ruling community. Lastly, this project shows an internal crack in the process of narrating gender roles, and reveals the contradiction of the ruling discourse presented by the elite group at the time.
