Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of mood alternation in pseudo-cleft constructions, such as ‘[[lo que + V] es que ~]’ and ‘[[lo (que es) + Adj.] es que ~]’. Examining mood selection according to predicate type, we observe consistency between non-pseudo-cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions in the cases of ‘influence’ and ‘certainty/conviction’ types. Specifically, the ‘influence’ type requires the subjunctive in both constructions, while the ‘certainty/conviction’ type requires the indicative in both. However, for predicates expressing ‘emotional reaction/value judgment’ such as gustar or importante, only the subjunctive is permitted in non-pseudo-cleft constructions, whereas both the subjunctive and the indicative are possible in pseudo-cleft constructions, with the indicative being used more frequently. This study analyzes the reasons for mood alternation in pseudo-cleft constructions when the predicate belongs to the ‘emotional reaction/value judgment’ type, aiming to provide learners with criteria for mood selection. Some scholars explain mood alternation in constructions like ‘el hecho de que ~’ and ‘aunque ~’ through the opposition of ‘new information = indicative vs. old information = subjunctive.’ This paper argues that this explanation can be fundamentally applied to mood alternation in pseudo-cleft constructions but also points out that it does not fully account for all instances. Through specific data analysis, this study demonstrates that the indicative is used not only when the content of the que-clause provides new information but also when old information is emphasized. Similarly, for the subjunctive, the study shows that, beyond marking the content of the que-clause as old information, it is frequently used to indicate unrealized or unverified events/actions at the time of utterance.
