초록
Abstract
This study explores the linguistic usage and geographical distribution of the Spanish adverb recién, traditionally linked to structures with participles (recién nacido or recién llegado), but whose usage has expanded in present-day Spanish. Through a historical overview and synchronic analysis based on corpora such as CORDIAM, CNDHE, and Davies’ Web/Dialects, the paper traces its evolution from Latin to contemporary usage across various Spanish-speaking regions. From a historical perspective, the research identifies the key stages in the development of recién, highlighting its early appearance in combination with participles and its progressive independence in broader contexts. The theoretical framework reviews positions on its etymological origin, functions and grammatical classification. From a synchronic perspective, a linguistic analysis identifies the most frequent combinations of the adverb with participles, nouns, adjectives, and verbs, as well as specific temporal expressions. Additionally, the research offers a geographical analysis that reveals dialectal patterns, emphasizing its frequency in the Southern Cone and in certain Andean areas, compared to its more restricted use in Spain and other regions. The results indicate that recién not only retains its traditional aspectual role, but it has also acquired new semantic and syntactic functions, becoming a flexible time marker.
