로이 바스카(Roy Bhaskar)는 포스트구조주의와 포스트모더니즘의 변증법 비판에 반해 변증법의 이론적 유효성을 복원하기 위해 다양한 개념을 가공하며 변증법을 현대적인 형태로 재구성하고자 시도한다. 이 작업의 핵심은 ‘부정(negation/ negativity)’의 이론으로서 변증법의 핵심은 유지한 채 헤겔의 변증법에 내재하는 ‘목적론’을 제거하며, 변증법을 열린 총체성의 체계로 재구성하는 것이었다. 자신이 가공한 과학적 현실주의의 핵심 개념인 발생기제(generative mechanism)의 인과성과 변증법을 접합하는 이러한 작업은 구조를 발생기제의 복합체로 파악하며, 비목적론적인 방식으로 변증법을 재구성할 수 있는 이론적 토대를 제시한다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다. 바스카는 또한 구조/행위자의 이중성(daulity of structure/agency) 개념을 바탕으로 구조주의에 내재하는 구조적 편향성을 수정하고 과학적 인과성의 틀 안에서 실천적 전화를 사고할 수 있는 인식론적 토대를 마련하고자 한다. 하지만 그가 변증법의 목적론적 성격을 완화하기 위해 도입하는 부재화로서 인과성(causation as absenting) 개념은 모순의 이론으로서 변증법의 이론적 지위를 모호하게 만든다. 또한 그가 전제하는 무의 존재론적 선차성은 변증법을 과장된 부정의 존재론으로 변모시킬 위험성을 지니기도 한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 바스카가 시도하는 변증법 개조 작업의 이론적 가능성과 한계를 검토하며 (바스카의 논의를 축으로) 변증법을 비목적론적으로 전화시킬 수 있는 이론적 조건에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이 과정에서 바스카와 유사한 이론적 시도를 수행하는 알튀세르와 아서의 논의도 살펴보며 이들 사이에서 형성되는 이론적 쟁점을 검토할 것이다. 특히 ‘부정의 부정’에 대한 입장 차이에 주목하고자 한다.
Abstract
In this paper, I aim to explore the theoretical possibilities and limitations of Roy Bhaskar's endeavor to reconstruct the dialectic in a non-teleological form. Bhaskar's approach involves transforming the dialectic into a theory of open totality while retaining its essence as a theory of negativity. To achieve this, he distinguishes the theory of the dialectic from that of contradictions and redefines 'negation' as 'absenting absence'. Bhaskar's concept of 'causation as absenting' is instrumental in reshaping the dialectic into a non-teleological framework. However, this perspective tends to relativize and trivialize the dialectic's theoretical significance as the theory of contradiction. Moreover, his prioritization of non-being over being ultimately leads to an exaggerated emphasis on non-being without offering a viable theoretical tool for analyzing socio-historical phenomena. On the other hand, Bhaskar's formulations of the duality of structure/agency and generative mechanisms provide valuable instruments for incorporating the efficacy of praxis into the notion of structure. This allows for the modification of an inherent structural deviation, all the while considering the effectiveness of social and political practices within the framework of scientific causality. To conclude, this paper will critically examine the theoretical potential and limitations of Bhaskar's attempt to construct a non-teleological dialectic. It will also investigate the necessary theoretical conditions for developing a dialectic that is free from teleology, building upon Bhaskar's dialectical framework.
