프랑스 사회과 교과서에서 시민은 시민공동체에서 일어나는 일에 대해 참여할 수 있는 능력을 가진 자라고 정의한다. 그러므로 올바른 시민은 이성적인 사고를 갖추고, 이를 표현하려는 자세를 가져야 하며, 대중들 사이에서 토론을 받아들일 수 있어야 하는 능력을 가져야 한다는 말이다. 토론이란 일상생활에서의 간단한 말의 주고받음이 아니라 민주주의 사회의 구성요소인 것이다. 프랑스 사회과 교과서는 이런 시민교육을 위해 교과서 내에서 토론식 교육방법을 강조하고 있다. 이 때문에 교과서 구성 체계는 한국과는 달리 자료 위주로 구성되어 있으며, 이 자료들을 해독할 수 있는 미디어리터러시 능력과 자료를 근거로 한 토론능력을 요구하고 있다. 게다가 활동노트라는 부교재의 사용으로 다양한 교육활동을 가능하게 하고 있다. 프랑스의 사회(시민) 교육은 시민들의 민주주의 참여에 대한 교육이 목적이므로 그 내용적 특성보다는 참여를 위한 교육방법이 특징적으로 나타나는 것이다.
Abstract
In french social studies textbooks, the citizen is defined as the one who has an ability to participate in the things that occur in their community. Therefore, the required right citizen needs to have rational thoughts, express that thoughts, and also have debating ability among the citizens. Debating is, not just daily communication, main part of democratic society. Thus, debating is emphasized as an educational method in french social studies textbooks. Contrast to korean textbooks, the french textbooks are composed mainly with documents, it also requires an ability for media literacy and for debating based on that materials. In addition "activity notebook" is used as the secondary textbook in France, it makes various educational activities possible. The main purpose of french social(citizen) education is the participation of democracy. Therefore french social education is more characterized by participation than contents itself.
