초록
이 논문은 부정소 안, 못, 말이 포함된 한국어 부정문이 영어 긍정문으로 번역되는 현상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 『엄마를 부탁해『엄마를 부탁해』는 ‘엄마’, 『엄마의 말뚝1』은 ‘말뚝’, 『삼포 가는 길』은 ‘삼포’로 예문에 표기하였다. 』, 『엄마의 말뚝1』, 『삼포 가는 길』의 한국어 본과 각 번역본 『Please Look After Mom』, 『Mother's Stake I』, 『The Road to Sampo』를 한영 병렬 번역 연구 자료로 선택하여 분석하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the translation phenomenon in which the Korean negative sentences including the negative elements such as ‘an’, ‘mos,’ and ‘mal’ were translated into English positive sentences. In these examples, they can be classified into two cases where the negative element has lost the meaning of negation or where the meaning of negation remains but is translated into positivity. The cases in which a negative element loses negative meaning can be found in the use of affirmative negative questions, redundant negation and metalinguistic negation. In affirmative negative questions, a negative element is used for confirmation without any meaning of negation. And redundant negation in Korean has been found in 'thinking predicate constructions' which have the sentences containing the predicate of "thoughts". In addition, the metalinguistic negation amplifies the meaning in the content of subsequent utterances rather than having the meaning of negation. Next, although the meaning of a negative element continues, the negatives have been omitted in translation, resulting in a positive statement. These examples are found in the negatives added in the resultative predications, duplicate expressions, and addition of the contents of the previous context. First, the purpose of adding a result in Korean is to clarify the result. Considering that this is perceived more naturally by Korean speakers, the added result was omitted from the translation as a preference for the expressions focusing on the actors or causes of the English language. Second, adding redundant expressions can be used to secure clear meanings and emphasize meanings, but where there is reasoning and resilience through context or contextual situations, it is omitted in the translation. Third, where the contents of the preceding context were added in the following sentence, it could be seen that it appeared as a positive sentence. It can be found the negative sentence is translated into positive sentence depending on whether the meaning of negative element in Korean has been lost or remains. When there is no meaning of Korean negative element, it is omitted and appears as a positive sentence in English. Even if a negative element contains its meaning, the negative sentence added as characteristics of Korean to clarify the result is omitted and appears as a positive sentence in English. This is because, based on the theory of relevance, the speaker tries to facilitate communication by exerting the maximum contextual effect on the listener with the minimum effort considering the context, which is also reflected in the translation.
