Abstract
The aim of this paper is to verify how high school students’ perception of task cost predicts their participation in learning and achievement. The survey targeted first year high school students, and the final analysis was based on 507 responses. The results of the study are as follows. First, the sub-factors of task cost showed differing effectiveness for predicting participation in learning. Specifically, in both Korean language and mathematics studies, higher levels of learners’ perceived effort cost led to higher levels of participation, while higher levels of perceived emotional cost led to lower levels of participation. Meanwhile, opportunity cost was not relevant to learning participation in both subjects. Second, sub-factors of task cost were shown to play different roles in predicting achievement. In the case of Korean language studies, higher levels of students’ perceived opportunity cost predicted lower achievement. On the other hand, in mathematics studies, higher levels of perceived emotional cost predicted lower achievement. Third, it was shown that participation in learning has a significant mediating role in the relationship between task cost and achievement.
