Abstract
In expectancy-value theory, the cost is as the fourth sub-construct of the task value. Cost is conceptualized based on cost-benefit analysis, it suggests that as the perception of costs associated with an activity increases, the overall value of that activity decreases. We tried to explore why the effort cost, one of the sub-factors of cost, does not always have a negative effect on the learning process and results. To investigate how the perception of effort cost contributes to subject learning, we surveyed 288 third-grade middle school students using an open-ended questionnaire. As a result of the analysis, the positive response rate that recognizing the effort cost is helpful for learning was high at 56.2% in Mathematics and 62.1% in Korean language. As a result of dividing the three groups according to achievement level, it was found that the group with high academic achievement had more responses that awareness of effort cost had a positive effect on learning.
