Abstract

A number of study regarding the influence of exercise and fitness on cognitive function and academic achievement has been conducted but those results are controversial. There are few studies examining the effect of fitness with multi-dimensional measurements of cognitive function. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of cognitive function and information processing time between 1st class and 4-5th class in physical activity promotion system (PAPS). Participants were forty eight 5th, 6th grade elementary school students consisting of twenty four 1st class and twenty four 4-5th class in PAPS. The cognitive function measurements used in the study were Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC), Comprehensive Test of Nonverbal Intelligence 2 (CTONI-2), STROOP color-word test, and auditory discrimination task. As the results, there were no significant differences in K-ABC Kaufman intelligence test, CTONI-2 Nonverbal Intelligence test and STROOP color-word test between PAPS 1st and 4-5th class groups. However, the information processing speed in 1st class was significantly faster relative to that in 4-5th class with no difference in performance accuracy. The study implies that the difference according to PAPS grade was greater in information processing time than other cognitive functions.
