Abstract

This study examines the construction process of the local cultural hub and the artistic or commercial use of the theater Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) in Wonsan. The local theater Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) shows the cultural tension between ‘Koreans conquered’ and ‘Japanese residing in Korea.’ Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) is a theater built in Wonsan in 1928. Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) was primarily a theater, but functioned as a public hall, too. The main agents in constructing Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) were Korean merchants who lived in Wosanjin (South town) during the Japanese Colonial Era, of whom No Giman was the most notable. Thus, Korean merchants built a theater and public hall for Koreans in Wosanjin. Wonsangwan (Wosan-theater) basically operated as a space for commercial interests, although the theater was built as a space for Koreans. This original purpose gradually diluted and eventually fell victim to commercial interests.
