‘-도록’ 목적 구문의 사용 양상과 제약

본 연구에서는 ‘-도록’ 목적 구문의 사용 양상을 살펴보고 사용 제약 현상을 설명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 100만 어절 규모의 연세 문어 균형 말뭉치로부터 ‘-도록’이 쓰인 사례를 추출하였고, 이 중 목적 구문에 해당하는 예문을 선별하여 ‘-도록’ 절의 서술어, 주절의 서술어, 선후행절의 주어 일치 양상을 관찰하였다. ‘-도록’ 목적 구문은 주로 [-주어 일치] 상황에서 쓰이고 있는데, 이를 바탕으로 ‘-도록’ 목적 구문은 ‘통제 가능성이 낮은 목적’을 달성하기 위해 어떤 사태를 수행하는 의미를 나타내는 것을 특징으로 갖는다고 보았다. 아울러 ‘-도록’ 목적 구문이 [+주어 일치] 상황에서 보이는 사용 제약 양상 역시 통제 가능성과 연관된다고 보았는데, 말뭉치 사례를 분석하고 ‘-도록’ 절이 나타내는 사태의 통제 가능성 차이에 따라 문장의 수용성이 달라지는 예들을 제시함으로써 그 근거를 보였다. 결론적으로 ‘-도록’ 목적 구문은 주로 [-주어 일치] 상황에서 쓰여 주절의 주체가 목적하는 사태에 직접 관여하지 못하고(즉 간접적으로 관여하고) 큰 통제력을 갖지 못하는 경우가 많은데, 이러한 특성이 [+주어 일치] 상황에도 이어져, 주절의 주체가 목적하는 사태에 대해 큰 통제력을 갖지 못하는 경우, 즉 자신과 관련된 목적이지만 쉽게 통제하기 어렵고 간접적인 관여를 하게 되는 경우에 ‘-도록’ 목적 구문이 쓰일 수 있다고 보았다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore the purposive usages of –dorok(-도록) construction, i.e. -dorok purposive construction, and then to explain the conditions and the constraints. To meet these ends –dorok construction’s constructs are singled out from Yonsei Balanced Literal Corpus, a million words size corpus of contemporary Korean, then the constructs of purposive usages are selected from them. The selected examples are analyzed in terms of the predicate to which the –dorok form is attached, the predicate of the following main clause, and the identicality of the referents between the purposive clause’s subject and the following main clause’s subject. Based on the observation that -dorok purposive construction is availiable almost only when the two subjects are not identical, we presume that the degree for the referent of the following main clause’s subject to control the purposive clause event introduced with –dorok is low. This condition or constraint is relevant even for the seemingly counter-examples that the subject’s referent of the –dorok purposive clause is identical to that of the following main clause. In these cases the purposive event is something reluctant or hard to do for the subject’s referent. To sum things up, when –dorok purposive construction is used usually its subject’s referent is different from that of the main clause, plus s/he has little control over the purposive event. This condition also holds for the constructs which have the purposive –dorok despite the fact that the two referents are identical. In these cases we repeatedly find that the control of the main clause subject’s referent over the purposive event is low.
