본 연구의 목적은 ‘여가’의 교육과정적 함의를 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 듀이와 피이퍼가 각각 언급한 여가 개념을 비교·분석한 후에, 그에 기초하여 여가가 교육과정에 던져주는 시사점에 대하여 고찰해 보았다. 듀이의 여가는 생계를 위한 일에서 벗어난 시간을 향유하는 것을 의미한다. 반면에 피이퍼에 의하면 여가(schole)는 일을 수행하는 가운데 은총으로서 찰나에 주어지는 실재와의 만남을 의미한다. 여가는 일에 대하여 직교적 관계에 있으며, 인간이 하는 모든 활동에서 일어날 수 있음에도 불구하고, 여가를 보장해 주기 위해서는 오직 여가만을 위한 별도의 활동을 인위적으로 따로 분리해 내어 가르치는 역설적인 조치가 요구된다. 그것이 바로 ‘자유학과’(liberal arts)의 이념이며, 오늘날에는 ‘격리’(seclusion)라는 의미로서 현대의 ‘교과’에 계승되고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the pedagogical implications of ‘leisure’. To this end, researchers compared the concept of leisure mentioned by Dewey and Pieper, and then considered the implications of leisure on the basis of it. Dewey's leisure means enjoying the time away from the job of making a living. On the other hand, according to Pieper, leisure(schole) refers to a encountering with reality given at the moment as a gift while working. As such, leisure runs at right angles to work, and therefore can occur in all human activities, not limited by the extra time between work and work in principle. Nevertheless, to guarantee leisure for modern people, it is necessary to take a paradoxical measure to artificially separate activities for leisure only out of all human activities. That is the ideal of “liberal arts,” and today it is inherited by modern “subjects,” meaning “seclusion.”
