Abstract
This thesis is an exploration of the discourses on religious freedom in Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Korea. The Adventist Church's attitude to religious freedom was reviewed focusing on two issues because military service and Sabbath issues occupy a large proportion. Regarding military service, the Adventist Church went through a three-step process. The first period (1950-1970) supported non-combatant military service, the second period (1971-2019) supported armed military service, and the third period (2020-present) supported the alternative service system. This process of attitude change on the type of military service suggests three points regarding religious freedom. First, the Adventist Church developed the logic that armed service does not violate Adventism in order to solve the problem of conscience that arises in the process of allowing armed service. Second, unlike Jehovah's Witnesses, the Adventist Church preferred a method of petitioning instead of a legal battle regarding military service. Third, the Adventist Church currently recommends an alternative service system, but the majority of young Adventists tend to choose armed service. While the Adventist church makes great efforts to expand the right to observe the Sabbath, more than half of the young Adventists are not interested in observing the Sabbath. As in the case of military service, there is a large difference in perception of the meaning of observing the Sabbath between the leadership of the denomination and the young Adventists. Currently, the Adventist Church exists as a minority religion in Korean society, but it becomes a majority's position in schools operated by the Samyuk Foundation. The Adventist Church's sensitivity to religious freedom depends on how they behave toward minority religions in these places that exist in the majority.
