Abstract

This study analyzes the social dynamics and adaptive strategies of Hoa Hao Buddhism (Phật giáo Hòa Hảo), a Vietnamese New Religious Movement founded by Huynh Phu So (黃富數, 1920-1947) in 1939. Applying a theoretical framework that combines Social Movement Theory's concepts of ‘political opportunity structure’ and ‘resource mobilization’ with Max Weber's sociology of power, this research examines how Hoa Hao Buddhism has survived and developed through 80 years of successive political regime changes. The historical development of Hoa Hao Buddhism is analyzed through four distinct periods. First, during the Buddhist reform and political pragmatism period (1939-1945), the movement mobilized masses through doctrinal reforms amid rural crisis in the Mekong Delta and escaped French colonial persecution through pragmatic alliance with Japan. Second, during the warlordization and independent government activities period (1945-1954), facing the routinization problem of charismatic authority after the founder's disappearance, it adapted through militarization and creation of “proto-state” autonomous zones. Third, during the disarmament and bureaucratization period (1954-1975), after engaging in armed confrontation against Ngo Dinh Diem's centralization policies and suffering military defeat, it established the Central Management Committee in 1964, transforming into an institutionalized religious organization. Fourth, during the state-religion interaction period based on social contract (1975-present), under the socialist system, it reinterpreted the Four Gratitudes (四恩) philosophy into charitable and welfare activities, constructing a new “social contract” with the state. This study demonstrates through the case of Hoa Hao Buddhism that religion-state relationships constitute not a simple confrontational structure but a complex spectrum of interactions including conflict, cooperation, coexistence, assimilation, and covert resistance. It also specifically reveals the impact of regional contexts and global changes on religious practice and identity formation in Southeast Asian New Religious Movement studies, providing important implications for understanding religious pluralism and cultural dynamics in modern Vietnamese society.
