오늘날 탈냉전 및 포스트모더니즘의 탈이데올로기화로 인해 군종제도의 역할은 새로운 도전에 직면하고 있다. 더욱이 MZ 세대로 알려진 초급간부 및 신세대 장병들은 과거와 달리 뚜렷한 개인주의적 성향을 보이고, 업무 관련 합리적인 설명을 요구하고 있으며, 종교의 자유와 차별금지 등에 대한 사회적 관심이 제고되는 등의 변화 흐름 속에서 군종제도는 새로운 시대에 맞춘 패러다임의 전환을 요구받고 있다. 그러한 상황에서 본연구는 우리나라의 군종제도의 역사와 발전을 조명하는 한편, 21세기에맞이하는 새로운 도전이라는 주제를 조명하며 개신교의 군종제도와 관련한 종교적 순기능을 제고하고, 역기능을 방지하는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 군종제도의 기원과 확산이라는 일반적인 역사를 살펴본 후, 우리나라 군종제도의 도입과 발전에 대하여 육, 해, 공군 및 개신교, 가톨릭, 불교 등의 각 종교별로 살펴보았다. 또한, 21세기를 맞이하여 한반도의 지정학적 상황 변화에 따른 국방개혁과 군목의 업무, 신세대 장병과 병영문화의 변화에 따른 목회적 돌봄, 그리고 종교의 자유와차별금지 관련한 주제를 중심으로 조명하였다
Abstract
Korean military chaplaincy has taken the role of spiritual leadership throughout the last seven decades. Amid the leadership, Korean protestant Christianity has provided the Korean army with mental and spiritual support by military chaplaincy. However, Korean military chaplaincy today faces diverse new challenges that are caused by post-Cold War and postmodernism. This is especially true because of the change in the international situation around the Korean peninsula and defense reformation, the new generation of soldiers and changes in the Army’s organizational culture, as well as requests for religious freedom and antidiscrimination. These changes are putting an enormous influence on the tasks of military chaplains. This study examines the origin and development of Korean military chaplaincy in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and each religion to cope with the challenges. The military chaplaincy in Korea was initiated by the navy first and then followed by the army and the air force. It included Protestant Christianity and Catholicism and then expanded to include Buddhism(Jogye Order) in 1968 and Won Buddhism in 2007. Within the Protestant churches, Presbyterian, Methodist, Holiness, and Salvation Army churches occupied the initial positions and Baptist and Pentecostal churches joined after the 1990s. Korean protestant military chaplains need to contribute to defense reformation as military officers, while they have to provide a new generation of soldiers with thoughtful ministerial care. They also have to guarantee the right to religious freedom and prohibit any type of religious discrimination. To fulfill the challenging tasks effectively and faithfully, protestant military chaplains have to preserve the sense of balance between the Text and the Context.
