소득불평등이 성장에 미치는 효과는 오래된 주제이다. 본 논문은 소득불평등의 증가가 지니계수로 측정될 때 시계열상에서 경제성장에 정의 효과를 가질 수 있음을 확인하였다. 하지만 소득불평등의 정도를 상위 1% 소득비중으로 측정하는 경우는 이러한 정의 효과도 사라짐을 확인할 수 있었다. Berg, Ostry, and Zettelmeyer(2008)와 Berg and Ostry(2011)는 단기성장과 장기성장을 구분하여 성장의 지속기간은 소득이 보다 평등할수록 길어짐을 보였다. 즉 소득불평등이 높을 경우 성장이 단기간 지속될 수 있지만 급격한 성장저하에 의해 성장에 단절이 오기 쉽다는 것이다. 본 논문은 소득불평등이 성장에 미치는 효과를 직접적 효과와 간접적 효과로 분리하여 분석하였다. 이를 통해 소득불평등의 증가가 직접적으로는 성장을 증진시키지만 간접적으로는 위기 발생을 촉진하여 경제성장을 낮출 수 있는 경로가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
On the basis of a country-year panel data set, this paper reinvestigates the relationship between income inequality and economic growth. Unlike existing studies, it focuses on the long-term(ten-year span) relationship and analyzes the indirect as well as the direct effects of inequality on the growth rate. Our fixed- effects Generalized Method of Moments estimates suggest that, while inequality enhances economic growth directly, it is positively associated with economic crisis, which in turn negatively affects the growth rate. Various sensitivity analyses are conducted.
