Abstract

Hyun Giyoung, a representative novelist of the Jeju 4․3 Uprising, has sought to establish his own perspective on 4․3 by constructing a genealogy of resistance rooted in Jeju’s popular uprising and the Jang Du tradition. This is most evident in his series of novels written during Korea’s transition to democracy, including A Bird Howling on the Periphery, The Windy Island, and The Spoon One on the Ground. The recurring motif of the Jang Du scapegoat in his narratives exposes the irrational hierarchy and historical trauma embedded in the mainland–island relationship, while also revealing the limitations of a community that seeks to preserve its order by designating scapegoats. This article examines how the historical events represented in Hyun Giyoung’s novels have been institutionalized from the perspective of people’s history and popular resistance. Furthermore, it explores the future direction of 4․3 discourse based on local memory and historical consciousness.
