Abstract
This article pays special attention to the fact that Hyun Ki-young’s novels have dealt with the 4․3 as a problem of temporality in which impairments/disabilities, trauma, and aging are intertwined, and explores its significance and importance. The procedure for discussing why Hyun Ki-young has repeatedly represented the bodies and lives of aging and ill survivors and what he attempted to emphasize through that is laid out here. The novels that focus on the lives of female survivors who embody both hardship and pride, open up their everyday life, and provide a starting point from which bodies living with ‘aftereffects’ break narrow-minded understanding, and expand the role of the ones who remain by emphasizing the practice of hospitality and care were the main analysis subjects. In fact, Hyun Ki-young’s novels have not ignored or omitted the pain faced by aging and ill survivors, and have pointed out what they have done and can do, while highlighting their power. Thus, Hyun Ki-young’s novel has drawn the reader’s attention not only to the scene of the 4․3, but also to the bodies and lives of the survivors, who all have pain, power, vulnerability, and historicity. This article, while following the traces left by Hyun Ki-young’s novels, which have been pondering the meaning of aging as a 4․3 survivor and living after the 4․3, attempts to underline the fact that both the 4․3 and Hyun Ki-young’s novels are still valid in the reality of the present.
