Abstract

In the early Cold War era, “Madame Butterfly” narratives that depicted romances across racial and national borders between Asian women and white American men gained popularity in the United States. Primarily authored by Western male writers and focalized through male protagonists, these works promoted a sentimental vision of America’s supposed racial openness, while obscuring the conflicts faced by Asian women and the mixed-race children born of interracial love. In contrast, Choi Jeong-hee’s Endless Romance—a contemporary “Madame Butterfly” narrative written by an East Asian woman—foregrounds Asian women’s hysteria and repressed sexuality, as well as the realities of overseas adoption of mixed- race Asian children, discursively framed through humanitarian relief and multiculturalism. This paper examines Choi’s novel as a text that both adopts the narrative conventions of Cold War “free world” romance and simultaneously fractures what Christina Klein has termed “Cold War Orientalism.” It analyzes how Choi contests hegemonic narratives through her revisions of the novel’s ending across multiple editions and explores her use of letters as a narrative device that articulates an unstable and ambivalent female voice.
