Abstract
We examine cross-country cases of household debt management, and provide a comparative perspective on institutional implications to suggest appropriate policy directions in Korea. Particularly, we classify household-debt management policies into two major categories: ex ante versus ex post. By reviewing the current framework of household debt management in Korea, beyond changing simply debt structures or reducing aggregate amount, we suggest that household-debt management policy should be directed toward improving qualitatively household debt in association with household income, managing the soundness of financial institutions ex ante, and minimizing negative effects on macroeconomy ex post.
