초록

The current paper investigates the definition of ‘修辭 [Xiūcí]’ as the translation of ‘rhetoric’ into Chinese Characters and the translation strategy used. The expression ‘xiūcí(修辭)’ originates from The Book of Changes; Confucius explains that xiūcí is inseparably linked with 君子(man of noble character) and 誠(sincerity). Xushen explains in his work Origin of Chinese Characters that xiūcí is not simply the technique for the refinement of the written or spoken word to render it more aesthetic and orderly, but represents the act of issuing a fair and equitable judgment based on the wén 文(texts, writings, sentence) that records the proper dào 道 (path, doctrine) as passed down through tradition, ultimately showing with clarity the proper way. Xiūcí therefore functions as a theory as well as the medium that links the thinking with the doing, by emphasizing that theory when unaccompanied by action is meaningless.
