이 논문은 고대 수사학의 말터 체계를 살펴보고 그 말터 체계가 현대의 텍스트 생산과 분석에 여전히 유효함을 보이는 데 그 목적이 있다. 우선 한국 학계에서 고대 수사학의 topos/locus 개념이 수용되는 역사를 간략히 살펴본 뒤에 소피스트로부터 아리스토텔레스, 키케로, 퀸틸리아누스까지의 말터 개념 및 체계의 역사를 추적한다. 고대 수사학의 말터 개념은 쿠르티우스에게 유럽 문학에 면면히 이어지는 “역사적 말터”를 연구하게 하였고 바르트는 이 개념을 적용하여 사랑에 관한 일종의 말터 사전을 만든다. 이 논문의 마지막 부분은 톨스토이의 소설, 하라리의 대중학문적 역사서, 한병철의 철학 에세이의 일부를 말터 체계를 이용해 분석한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to evaluate critically the Topics in classical rhetoric and then to examine its applicability to today’s textual production and analysis. It begins with a brief survey of the adaptation of the Topics, or rather topos / locus in Korea. Then, it looks into the conceptions of topoi / loci in classical rhetoric from Sophists through Aristotle to Cicero and Quintilian. As for its modern applications, on the other hand, it argues that Barthes vitalizes in his Lovers’s Discourses Curtius’s concept of “historical topoi.” Finally, it analyses topoi in three passages from modern writings: Tolstoi’s fiction, Yuval Harari’s popular science historiography, and Byung-Chul Han’s philosophical essay.
