Abstract

This study examines effects of learning three types of two different-genre listening tasks on English news listening comprehension. Eighteen high to intermediate-level Korean undergraduate and graduate students were respectively divided into three experimental groups (note-taking, summarizing, and prediction). Learners were instructed to participate in narrative and expository listening tasks. The final test included three types of tasks (predicting, note-taking, and summarizing) consisting of narrative and expository news and assessing English news listening comprehension. The outcomes showed that there were differences in listening comprehension on narrative and expository English news listening among the three groups. Inferencing and summarizing task learning had a positive influence on expository English news listening. Summarizing task learning had a positive influence on narrative English news listening. Therefore, predicting and summarizing tasks are highly recommended for these reasons. The implications of this study would help high-intermediate adult English learners improve their listening comprehension ability by performing listening tasks such as predicting and summarizing when they try to listen relatively more demanding listening texts such as English news.
