Abstract

This thesis criticizes through metaphor analysis the Nobel Lecture on genetic codes, given by Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize laureate for the revelation of the structure of DNA. Considering the contents of the Nobel Lectures by other Nobel Prize winners, Crick decides to give a lecture on a subject that was of investigative interest to him at the time. The genetic code designates 20 amino acids in units of 3 consecutive bases without overlapping, but it is suggested based on the experimental results that 4 types of bases have discrimination and a group of three bases forms a genetic unit, codon. With expressive features of words of humility and openness, repetition of questions and answers, and listing of informations, the speaker presents the end notes in which more specialized knowledge can be delivered even though the lecture was aimed at non-experts. The expressive metaphors used in this lecture are based on the conceptual metaphors [GENE IS CODE], [GENETIC INFORMATION IS WRITTEN TEXT] which had been adopted by Crick to promote a consistent and effective conceptual understanding of the genetic codes. While explaining some concepts such as ‘commaless code,’ ‘two or three letter codes’, and ‘combination triplet code’ the speaker enhances the understanding of the audience by adapting the conceptual metaphor which maps between the mental spaces an unfamiliar object as the genetic information being transmitted in living organisms to a familiar object as the written text through which information is transmitted in human society.
