Abstract
This study investigated the direct effects of dance instructors’ mentoring functions on the subjective well-being of university students majoring in contemporary dance, and examined the mediating role of communication competence in these relationships. A total of 183 contemporary dance majors from universities nationwide participated in a survey conducted between August 23 and October 3, 2024. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 through exploratory factor analysis, reliability testing, multiple regression, and mediation analyses. The results indicated significant positive (+) effects of career-related, psychosocial, and role modeling mentoring functions on efficacy well-being; positive (+) effects of psychosocial and role modeling functions on emotional well-being; and positive (+) effects of career-related and psychosocial functions on relational well-being. Mediation analyses further revealed that communication competence—specifically understanding others, self-expression, and communication—partially mediated the relationships between mentoring functions and all three dimensions of subjective well-being. These findings highlight the importance of fostering educational paradigms that center on students’ subjective well-being and establishing psychological and emotional support systems within dance education. Expanding research samples in future studies is also recommended.
