Abstract

This study investigated research trends in academic literature related to dance for the elderly using text mining and to identify changes in research topics over time. A total of 521 KCI-listed papers were analyzed, retrieved using the keywords ‘elderly’ and ‘dance’ over the past 25 years (2000–2025). Keyword frequency analysis, topic modeling, and linear regression were conducted using Python 3.8. First, The keyword analysis revealed high frequencies for terms: ‘elderly’, ‘program’, ‘exercise’, ‘participation’, ‘dance’, ‘women’, ‘health’, ‘body’, ‘Korean_dance’, ‘dementia’, ‘depression’, ‘leisure’, and ‘dance program’. Second, topic modeling identified eight major themes, including ‘Combined Exercise and Physical Function Improvement’, ‘Walking and Balance Ability’, ‘Physical Education and Dance Research Trends’, 'Psychological and Emotional Health', ‘Leisure Centered on Lifestyle Dance’, ‘Culture and Arts-Based Healing’, ‘Dementia Prevention and Cognitive Enhancement’, and ‘Dance Education and Perception’. Third, regression analysis further distinguished two Hot Topics—’Dance Education and Perception’ and ‘Psychological and Emotional Health’—which have shown increasing scholarly attention in recent years, and two Cold Topics—’Combined Exercise and Physical Function Improvement’ and ‘Walking and Balance Ability’—with declining interest. These findings may offer a comprehensive overview of the trajectory of dance-related research targeting older adults and provide foundational insights for promoting dance participation among the aging population.
