Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore in depth how Catholic social welfare practitioners experience Caritas in the fieldwork and how these experiences contribute to the formation of their identity as practitioners of Caritas, ultimately providing guidance for future practice. To achieve this, a qualitative content analysis was conducted on the collection of practice essays titled We Will Walk Together, published in 2023 by the Catholic Social Welfare Bureau of the Diocese of Daejeon. The analysis identified ten general categories encapsulating the meaning of Caritas as experienced by Catholic social welfare practitioners: “Role models of service inspired by faith and their own experiences of service,” “Attraction to Catholic social welfare,” “Exploration of occupational identity aligned with personal beliefs,” “Collaborative work culture within Catholic institutions,” “Reflection on the identity and mission of a Catholic social worker,” “Discovery of values and purpose beyond the job: fulfilling a shared vocation,” “Caritas practitioners working with love,” “Neighborly love permeating everyday life,” “Companionship in life where all live together,” and “Community of love.” Based on these findings, this study discusses the process through which Catholic social welfare practitioners become Caritas practitioners, the vocation and dignified labor of a Caritas practitioner, and the key features of Caritas, namely, “life companions in mutual support” and “community of love.” These findings can serve as valuable educational material for fostering the identity of practitioners in Catholic social welfare institutions
