종교계 사회복지기관 비신자 자원봉사자의 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

본 연구는 종교계 사회복지기관(faith-based organization)의 자원봉사자 중 해당 종교의 신자가 아닌 이들의 봉사활동 경험을 다루고자 하였다. 비신자인 자원봉사자들이인지하는 봉사활동 경험에 대해 현상학적 기술 방법으로 분석하고, 자원봉사자 중심관점에서 생태환경을 파악하였다. 연구 목적을 위해 사회복지 전달체계상 고유한 단일조직의 특성을 가지고 있는 서울 소재 가톨릭 사회복지기관 소속 자원봉사자 7명을연구참여자로 선정하여 자료를 수집하였고, 특히 봉사활동의 만족과 관계있는 현상들을 탐색한 결과를 분석하였다. 경험의 구조에 대한 분석 결과, ‘호감의 맥락’, ‘이방인에서 참여자로’, ‘공동체의 중재’, ‘소통이라는 동력’, ‘움츠러드는 오른손들’, ‘소통의 방해자들’, ‘공감으로 가는 길’, ‘내적 성장의 징표’ 등 여덟 개의 본질적 주제가 도출되었으며, 그 주제들을 관통하고 있는 핵심은 자원봉사자들이 인지하고 있는 커뮤니케이션의 경험과 그 의미에서 주로 발견되었다. 이로써 사회복지기관의 종교적 특성이 커뮤니케이션 과정에서 비신자인 자원봉사자들에게 어떤 방식으로 경험되는지 파악할 수있었다. 이와 같은 분석을 통해 핵심 주제는 ‘머뭇거림과 커뮤니케이션 적응을 통한융화의 교점(node) 찾기’로 도출하였다. 본 연구는 소통의 가치가 점차 중요시되는 현대사회에서, 비신자들의 종교계 사회복지조직 참여와 만족에 있어서 커뮤니케이션의중요성을 발견하였다는 데에 의미가 있다. 특히 종교계 사회복지기관의 자원봉사 프로그램의 설계에 있어서 종교 담론적 커뮤니케이션에 대한 성찰이 필요함을 제언한다.
Abstract
This study is about the experiences of the volunteers for a certain faith-based welfare organization who don't belong to that religion. This study focuses on the analysis of the experiences of their volunteering through phenomenological descriptive method, and figures out the ecological environment from the volunteers' point of view. Information is collected from seven participants who were volunteering for Catholic social welfare organization in Seoul, which has unique characteristics of single structure on social welfare delivery system. I analyzed the phenomena focused on satisfaction of volunteering. Eight essential themes are drawn by the analysis of the structure of the experiences; context of attraction, from a stranger to a participant, intervene of community, dynamic force called communication, shrinking right hands, obstructors of communication, path to empathy, and sign of internal growth. The key that penetrates these themes is found from the experiences and meanings perceived by volunteers through communication, which helps to understand how the nonbeliever volunteers experience the religious characteristics of faith-based organizations through the communication process. This analysis leads to the core message: searching for nodes to harmonize through hesitation and communication adaptation. This study is worth to find the importance of communication for nonbeliever volunteers to participate in faith-based organizations especially when the value of communication is getting bigger. I propose religious and introspective discussion on communication in design of volunteering program of faith-based welfare organizations.
