Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the feminist discourse led by the female leader of the French National Union Marine Le Pen - one of the far-right parties generally known for pursuing misogynistic policies. Unlike the previous far-right leaders in France, Marine Le Pen has been active in advancing feminist discourses by pledging to promote women's rights or seeking to increase the number of female members from her party within the National Assembly. However, this study points out that this is nothing more than a trick to achieve political purposes in pursuit of far-rightism using the support of increasing female voters. In other words, it can be said that Le Pen's feminist discourse is not based on sincerity toward gender equality, but is rather 'fake' feminism as a part of the National Union’s de-demonization strategy, a political strategy that has long been pursued to make the party enter a ‘normal’ party within the existing party order. By identifying Marine Le Pen's feminist discourse as 'fake' feminism, this study aims to broaden the horizon of research on far-right parties. In addition, it intends to contribute to promoting a comprehensive understanding of the growth factors of far-right parties without repeating the previous researches, which has focused mostly on analyzing background factors and election results to merely explain the birth and growth of far-right parties.
