다큐멘터리 연극의 한 가지 방식인 버바팀 연극은 90년대 이후부터 영미권, 유럽권, 아프리카권 및 한국 연극계에서 괄목할만한 성장을 이루어왔다. 특히 한국연극에서는 2014년 세월호참사, 2015년 검열사태 및 블랙리스트 의혹, 2016년 국정농단과 촛불집회, 2017년 새정부 출범과 적폐청산 개혁, 2018년 미투운동 등으로 이어지는 흐름 속에서 그 어느 때보다 공적/법적 사건들에 많은 대중적 주목이 있었고, 그 과정에서 기록과 진술, 증언, 폭로들이 그야말로 쏟아지면서 현실을 포착하기 위한 방법으로서 버바팀 연극에 대한 관심이 크게 부상했다. 요컨대 현재 우리 사회 전반에서 이루어지고 있는 정치적, 제도적, 사회적, 윤리적 탐색과 정치사회적 담론들의 발생은 버바팀 연극에 대한 주목으로 이어지며 동시대 정치극의 스펙트럼을 확장시키고 있다 해도 과언이 아닌 것이다. 이에 본고는 버바팀 연극이 응용될 수 있는 실천적 가능성을 탐색해 보기 위해 극단 ‘여기는 당연히, 극장’의 <킬링타임>(2016)을 중심으로 버바팀 연극에서의 드라마투르기 방식을 분석해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
Verbatim Theatre as one of the documentary techniques has been increasingly experimented in many countries from Europe, Africa, US to Korea since 1990. In order to take a look at the tendency of Korean verbatim theatre, it is worthy to note that a series of critically political issues were clashed when the verbatim theatre started being focused in Korea: Sewol Ferri disaster in 2014, revealing evidences on state-leading censorship and state-sponsored blacklists in 2015, presidential scandal and candlelight demonstration in 2016, launching the new government and its drive to reform in 2017 and so on. While we have been through such a fierce political time, we came to pay much attention to official/legal events such as hearing, trial, inspection than ever, and also watched a pour of testimonies and statements to reveal a hidden/oppressed truths. The verbatim theatre in Korea receives much attention in this particular situation in a way to represent the reality, which seems more theatrical and even fictional than theatre in ironic way. In other words, it can be said that the Korean verbatim theatre is closely related to Korean social political environment, and contributes to widen contemporary Korean political theatre as well. Considering theatre practitioner's need and desire to understand what is verbatim theatre and how to approach it, this thesis aims to introduce a possibility of applying verbatim technique by specifically studying on the dramaturgy of Killing Time, based on the hearing of Sewol Ferri disaster directed by Ja-Hye Khoo, as a representative example of contemporary Korean verbatim theatre.
