Abstract

The verbatim theatre, which has been actively experimented in many english speaking countries since 1990s, refers to a dramatic presentation through editing, arranging or re-contextualising of research, records or interview. Its sources of material, so-called document, ranges from the official transcripts of such as trial, hearing and public inquiry, official or private interview (oral words of real people) to very private records such as diary, memo, photo, video etc. As we know the literal meaning of verbatim(word for word), the verbatim theatre is a sort of documentary technique which leans on the spoken texts. The recent manifestation of verbatim theatre is very recognizing with a contemporary documentary theatrical booming. The verbatim theatre is a part of documentary theatre, however, it reveals a different theatrical tendency: While the contemporary documentary theatre seems to show of postdramatic characteristics, British verbatim theatre tends to be armed a kind of conventional dramatic form and structure. With the recent theatrical phenomenon, this study aims to research on these issues: What makes the verbatim theatre to be received high attention these days? Have there been social, political or cultural stimuli to documentary/verbatim drive? What kinds of characteristics does the verbatim theatre have as a new(contemporary) dramatic playwriting? As I focus on British verbatim theatre, the so-called motherland of contemporary manifestation of verbatim theatre, I would like to study the theatricality of verbatim form focused on the particular tribunal play The Colour of Justice, regarded as the representative repertoire of Tricycle theatre.
