본 연구는 포스트모던 작품의 효시로 간주되는 사무엘 베케트의 후기작품에 등장하는 탈(脫)중심화된 인물의 언어적/비언어적 메시지에서 특정한 의미 발 견의 가능성에 관한 문제의식으로 출발하여, 등장인물의 분열된 정체성이 담아 내는 작품의 주제적인 의미체계를 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 베케트의 후기작품의 특징을 이해하기 위해 그의 작품 세계관에 큰 영향을 미친 포스트모던 연극의 미 학을 핵심적으로 살펴보고, 그 중심요소로 탈중심화된 등장인물의 개념 및 정의 에 대해 엘리노어 푹스(Elinor Fuchs)의 이론을 바탕으로 살펴볼 것이다. 본 연구 의 주제인 베케트의 Happy Days(1961)에 등장하는 주인공 위니(Winnie)의 분열 적 징후를 해석하기 위해서는 인간 심연의 무의식 세계를 상징적/기호적 체계로 분석하는 정신분석학적 개념들이 활용될 것이다. 정신분석학적 비평은 인간 심리의 작동원리와 인간의 행동양식을 그 의도나 목적과 관계없이 하나의 언어적 체계로 재현해내는 데 그 효용성이 있다. 의미체계의 불확정성을 갖는 포스트모 던 작품 속에서 새로운 대안의 의미론적 가능성을 찾는다는 점에 본 연구의 의의 가 있다. 포스트모던 현상 속에서 탈중심화된 등장인물이 전달하는 이해할 수도, 표현할 수도 없는 언어적/비언어적 메시지에 대한 의미체계를 연구하고자 하는 본 논문의 시도가 연극실천가들에게 좋은 영감이 되기를 바라며 향후 전통극의 등장인물 연구와 마찬가지로 간학제적인 방향에서 더욱 활성화되어 논의되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study starts with a question about the possibility of finding a particular meaning in the decentralised character’s inexplicable verbal/non－verbal messages in Beckett’s later work, considered to be the beginning of a postmodern plays. First, to understand the aspect of Beckett’s later work, this study examines the aesthetics of postmodern theatre before it reviews the concepts of decentralised characters by Elinor Fuchs’s dispersal idea of self and her allegorical criticism. For interpreting the divisive signs of Winnie in Happy Days, this study utilises psychoanalytic concepts that analyse the unconscious world of the human abyss as a semiotic and symbolic system. Psychoanalysis mainly helps represent the working principles of human psychology and behaviour into a specified linguistic system regardless of its intention and purpose. This study is original because it seeks the new alternative semantic possibilities in the postmodern works showing the undecidability of the semantic system. Thus, the attempt of this study will serve as a good example for theatre practitioners. Hopefully, this research could be further activated in the interdisciplinary discussion, like studying characters in the traditional drama.
