Abstract
This study criticizes the non-representational drama(anti-Aristotelian plays) of the 20th century from a two-sided perspective. By understanding the narrator’s psychology of the play and the reader’s experience, this study separately examines the meaning and the way of expressing it. This study aims to specify the multi-meanings of Beckett’s later plays representing the nothingness and emptiness of the search for meaning by linking the narrator’s psychological state and the reader’s sense toward the narrator’s speech act. So, this study first understands the background of non-representation dramas and examines Structural semiotics followed by New-criticism and Reader-response criticism. This study discusses Beckett’s later play Not I(1972) on the psychological state of the narrator leading to the theme of failed self-formation and the reader’s influence(sense) through the speech act of the ‘mouth’. Beckett’s works have no causal narrative development but only the constantly repeated typical situations, so it is essential to investigate how the forms of the play mediate readers. When discovering the hidden meanings in the text and discussing the expression methods that embodied the meanings from the reader’s point of view, it can identify the latent depression and division on the deep consciousness of humans. Therefore, this study argues that the non-representational play produces more affluent meanings based on the interpretation of the work and the embodied meanings through the reader’s experience.
