Abstract
This paper delves into the intricate world of theatrical aesthetics and deconstructed identities in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, a seminal work that redefined the landscape of performance through its profound reflections on theatrical language and the nature of subjectivity. Distinct from other 20th-century playwrights, Beckett revolutionized theatrical language while probing questions about human identity and the essence of theater. Beckett’s reflections on theatrical genres led to his subversion of traditional theatrical forms and creation of a new theater, which is now recognized as the Theater of the Absurd. As articulated by Jean Duvignaud and Jean Lagoutte, the Parisian nouveau théâtre of the 1950s, epitomized by the works of Beckett and Ionesco, drew its vitality not from entrenched French literary traditions but from the contemporary experiences and theaters. Beckett’s dramaturgy is underpinned by a triadic crisis encompassing language, subject, and object, fundamentally challenging and reconfiguring the established theatrical paradigm to broaden the horizons of the new theater. In Waiting for Godot, Beckett employs a distinctive theatrical vernacular to bring to life two pivotal themes: the identity of the play itself and the intricate exploration of subjectivity. These thematic investigations coalesce to create a compelling spectacle of human existence, manifesting Beckett's vision of theater as a medium of existential inquiry and aesthetic innovation.
