Abstract
As its name suggests, Beckett’s later work Play(1962), a self-reflective play, has a characteristic that new meaning is created every time by activating the audience’s perceptual judgment through the linguistic function and the stage effects. The meta-critics in the Play, raising the question of theatricality itself, transcend the boundary confrontation between real/virtual, stage/audience, and continues to interact with the phenomenal sensation/perception of audiences at present, revealing their self-consciousness. Accordingly, this study argues that the meta-characteristics of Play induce de-centred interactions between text(stage) and readers(audience) to create performative effects as a response to producing the meaning of work. By reflecting on the author’s biography, the study will reveal the facts that Beckett’s work has a meta-structure in which its meaning is embodied by borrowing the language of others under the accidental process. As a first clue to identifying the meta-characteristics, this study analyzes the performative effects of the teller’s speech act through John Austin’s theory, which defines ‘performance utterance’. Second, it grasps the theatrical form of inducing liminal intervention with receivers through Erika Fischer-Lichte’s theory of conceptualizing the ‘transformative power generated by materiality on the stage’. As such, the direction of this study stems from the performance-based experience away from the existing literary ideas attached to the mythical allusions and poetic style of Beckett’s work. Through this research, it is hoped that an interdisciplinary approach to studying Beckett’s later works can be reevaluated, so that they can be read more abundantly by various readers/audiences.
