Abstract

This study explores the performativity in the narrative of the absurd play, Eugene Ionesco’s <The Chairs>(1952) that rejected the convention of dramatic plays, based on the narrative features of postdramatic theatre and the performative concepts. While discussions on theatrical text in the flow of post-drama focused on either director’s or co-creative writing, plays tend to be dismissed as a subject of the past. This study reflects the postdramatic phenomena neglecting plays as research topics. There is sufficient evidence that in the narrative of absurd plays that intend to self-destruct on the theatrical convention, the way of expression/ action(storytelling) is more important than the content(story), and the meaning of the narrative is secured through an interaction with the audience participating in the producing work. Moving forward from the previous research identifying the theatrical significance, author’s intentions and philosophical meaning of absurd plays, this study examines the texture of absurd play in the relationship between the content of narrative and the way of it is expressed. In this sense, this study intends to expand the two-sided function of the narrative of absurd plays and discovers its performative potential. This discovery is meaningful in that it reconsiders the value of plays that escape the confrontation between presence and mimesis. From this research, it is expected that the perceptual strategy of post-drama can be applied to more diverse types of plays.
