2,000년이 넘도록 中原 중심으로 돌아간 동아시아 국제질서 프레임에 구조적 도전을 처음으로 가한 사건은 일본이 일으킨 임진왜란(1592~1598)이었다. 당시에는 조선과 명의 총체적 국력이 아직은 일본의 침공을 막을 수 있었지만, 약 300년 후 동북아질서의 전통적 패러다임을 바꾼 청일전쟁(1894~1895)을 예시하기에는 충분하다. 이것이 바로 동아시아에 관심을 둔 영어권 역사가들이 임진왜란을 연구주제로 잡은 이유이다. 그런데 호란(1627, 1637)에 대한 관심은 상대적으로 극히 미미하다. 왜란과는 달리, 호란은 청의 ‘중원정복전쟁’ 과정에서 한반도를 대상으로 일으킨 국지전이었을 뿐만 아니라, 그런 일방적 침공의 결과가 청의 중원정복이라는 거시적 흐름에 큰 영향을 줄 정도로 심각하지도 않았기 때문이다. 이 비평논문에서는 영어권 학계에서 호란 자체를 다룬 거의 유일한 단독 논문인 로스키의 연구를 우선적으로 검토했다. 청군이 남한산성을 포위한 상황에서 홍타이지와 인조 사이에 오간 서신을 만문 자료와 한문 자료를 대조하고 그 차이를 지적하는 데 그친 로스키에 비해, 이 비평논문에서는 그런 차이를 좀 더 명확히 파악하되 그런 차이가 발생한 이유를 『인조실록』 편찬자의 고의적인 첨삭에 무게를 두어 살폈다. 다음에는, 정묘호란의 동인에 대한 기존 해석을 종합・정리한 로스키의 글을 검토했다. 특히 당시 후금 내부의 식량 부족을 조선침공의 주요 동인으로 본 기존 해석에 이의를 제기하는 방향으로 비평을 가했다. 마지막으로는, 호란의 여파, 더 정확히 말하자면 삼전도항복(1637)과 명의 몰락(1644)이 조선에 남긴 엄청난 후유증을 다룬 일부 연구를 소개했다. 영어권 학계에서 호란 관련으로 갖는 연구 관심은 호란의 여파가 조선후기 조선사회(post-Ming Korea)를 어떻게 좌우했는지에 닿아 있었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 호란의 충격에서 벗어나기 위한 자구책으로서 일세를 풍미한 ‘北伐 프로퍼갠더’와 ‘조선중화’ 사상 및 그에 대한 반동으로 한때 등장한 北學論은 국내 학계에서도 주지하는 바이지만, 그런 사조의 전이과정을 호란의 여파를 극복하기 위한 조선 지배엘리트들의 자구노력이었다는 프리즘으로 조망하는 통시적 시각은 아무래도 영어권 학계가 더 강한 것 같다.
Abstract
The Imjin War (1592-1592), also known as the Hideyoshi Invasion of Korea, was the main event on the eve of the turn of the 1600s, which seriously challenged the existing Chinese world order from the south for the first time in East Asian history. Some Western scholars have showed their interests in this Great East Asian War. Unlike the Imjin War, Western scholars have had little interest in the Manchu invasions of Korea (1627, 1637; horan in Korean) because it was a sort of regional war that did not have a decisive effect on the course of the Manchu conquest of China. Indeed, a few Western scholars displayed their interests in the Manchu invasions of Korea. This review article first examines Evelyn Rawski’s article on the correspondences between Injo, King of Chosŏn, who escaped in haste into a mountain fortress in the early phase of the second Manchu invasion, and Hong Taiji who laid siege to the fortress. In addition to Rawski’s discovery that some parts of Hong Taiji’s original letter to Injo were omitted in the veritable records (sillok) of the Chosŏn dynasty, this article provides not only some contents of the veritable records that are not in either the Manchu text or the Qing shilu but also the reasons why over 70% of the original letter were either omitted or added intentionally by the historiographers of the veritable records. This article also refutes the common understanding among scholars, including Rawski, that one of the reasons why Hong Taiji launched a military campaign against Chosŏn in late 1627 was a chronic food crisis in the Later Jin. No primary source suggests that the Jurchen demanded a large amount of provisions in the course of peace talk with Chosŏn. Focusing on JaHyun Kim Haboush’s articles and monograph, this article also looks at the aftermath of the Chosŏn surrender to the barbaric Manchu in 1637, which played a major role in shaping the post-Ming Chosŏn politics and policies, comparing it with contemporary Korean scholars’ studies.
