Abstract
The Dilemma between Internationalism and Atlanticism; UK's Approach on European Security and Defence Policy (1998-2003) Hoang, Young-ju (Pusan University of Foreign Studies) Sohn, Moo-Jung (Kyungpook National University) This article deals with how Tony Blair's government approached the ESDP of European Union from 1998 to 2003. As well known, UK was categorized as the Atlantics states which hinges on strong security and defence relationship with the United States rather than European states. At first labour governments the principle in foreign affairs is ‘internationalism’ in which international cooperation and interdependence. With this kind of inclination, Blair's attitude to the EU and ESDP was very active. In that attitude, the British government was interested in the Bridge Role, the Compensation strategy and Complementary strategy between the United States and European Union. After 9.11 terror, British government was rapidly turned to traditional stance, the Atlantics group. In other words, British government was care of ‘special relationship’ with Unites States, and the attitude was a pattern of continuity.
