Abstract
Both retrospection and partisan identity influence individual voters' presidential choice in the 2020 US general elections. First, American voters were found to be influenced by President Trump's handling of covid-19. Voters whose evaluated Trump's covidhandling high were more likely to vote for Trump. Second, partisanship remains important in choosing presidential candidate. In particular, mass partisanship played the key role in individuals political choice. Third, retrospective evaluation and partisan identity are found to interact with each other. Retrospective voting based on presidential approval was moderated by partisanship. 77.6 % of Democratic voters who strongly supported Trump’s covid-handling voted for Trump. Less 50% of Democratic voters who strongly opposed Trump’s covid-handling voted for Trump. Also, evaluation of Trump’s pandemic handling affected the Whites who used to be Republican. Among voters who supported, opposed, and strongly opposed Trump’s pandemic policy, probability of voting for Trump is respectedly 31.5%, 6.0%, and 1.2%. In sum Trump would have reelected if he had handled covid-19 pandemic more successfully.
