Abstract
The EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on May 1, 2024. Both parties anticipate that the agreement will generate substantial economic opportunities. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960, both parties have cultivated a healthy and prosperous relationship, driven by mutual global interests. Empirical research on EU-NZ relations has predominantly concentrated on bilateral trade and investment. Despite emerging research related to Free Trade Agreements and their related aspects, there is still a lack of appropriate reviews. This study aims to offer a detailed examination of the FTA negotiations using Putnam's discourse analysis method to uncover insights present within the negotiation process. The results show that the EU prioritized expertise and compliance with international standards in negotiations, while New Zealand emphasized compensation for its vital domestic industries. From a societal standpoint, the official statements of both parties demonstrated a strong dedication to engaging in effective communication in order to address and resolve disagreements. From a political standpoint, the EU's strategic alignment with its Indo-Pacific strategy seems to have been instrumental in achieving a positive outcome. This study highlights the significance of discourse analysis in negotiations, providing valuable insights for strategy development, compromise, identity construction, relationship management, understanding stakeholder interests, enhancing communication, and improving policies.
