Abstract

Recently, the European Union (EU) has introduced a series of ESG regulatory frameworks, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). These frameworks are expected not only to function as new non-tariff barriers in international trade but also to have far-reaching impacts across global supply chains. The purpose of this study is to analyze the legislative trends of EU ESG regulations and to propose directions for improving Korea’s ESG policies and standards. In particular, by comparing and analyzing the alignment between the EU’s ESRS and global ESG standards (such as GRI, ISSB, and SEC regulations), this study seeks to derive institutional implications that can enhance the international acceptance and credibility of Korea’s ESG framework. As a trade-dependent economy, Korea faces ESG compliance with the EU not as a matter of choice but as an inevitable task. Accordingly, this study provides policy alternatives for Korean companies and the government, thereby laying the foundation for responding effectively to changes in the international trade environment.
