Abstract
This study employs panel regression analysis, utilizing the Fixed Effects (FE) model and Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation, to examine the impact of ESG implementation levels on maritime trade volumes (TEU, Tons) among OECD member countries. The findings indicate that environmental (E) regulations exert contrasting effects on TEU and Tons, while social (S) and governance (G) factors also exhibit differential impacts depending on the trade structure. In particular, stricter environmental regulations are likely to increase trade costs by introducing carbon border taxes and non-tariff barriers (NTBs). Additionally, countries with higher social standards may impose trade restrictions on partners that do not meet labor rights and ethical production standards. Moreover, the strengthening of ESG criteria appears to facilitate the restructuring of international trade networks and may serve as a new form of NTB. Future research should further refine the analysis by considering disaggregated maritime trade volumes to better assess the impact of ESG factors on the trade structures of OECD member countries.
